I remember when I was ten, while my younger brother was biking outside with other kids and my older sister was hanging out with her girl friends, I was home busy re-arranging furniture in our living room.
I would always take advantage of those times, when my mother was out grocery shopping or attending church meetings. For me, that time was priceless! I had two to three hours to possibly impress my mother and give our living room an instant makeover, and it would get me really excited, and it drove my mother crazy at the same time.
She would come home to a different living room lay out, and different furniture and accessory placement, and she would call my name as soon as she stepped in the house, and boy, did I know I was in big trouble! Did I stop doing it? You’re right, I didn’t.
Fast forward twenty years, after moving to two houses in the span of almost ten years, my parents bought a new 5000 square foot house, and it was then that I had my first big project and my first client – my mother. She asked me decorate our new house! I was ecstatic! The house turned out to be the best house on the block, and my mother couldn’t have been happier and prouder of me!
“When I was 5 years old, my mother told me that happiness was the key to life. When i went to school they asked me what I wanted to become when I grew up. I wrote down “happy”. They told me I didnt understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” – John Lenon
Looking back, one of the most important lessons that my mother taught me was to never give up, follow my dream, and pursue my passion. She once told me “we cannot choose our passion; it is passion that chooses us,” which makes more sense to me now. Following her words was my saving grace; I can’t imagine what I would be, had she discouraged my talent during those early years.
Now as a professional home stager and decorator, my mother is my cheerleader, my critic, my supporter, and my biggest fan! She is my constant source of strength and wisdom.
To my Mom, thank you for being the BEST mother anyone can ever have. I love you!
Hats off to all the mothers out there! Happy Mother’s Day to you all!
