The Secret to Staging with Neutrals (That Isn’t Boring)
January 29, 2015Neutral colours are perfect when staging your home for sale. It is a colour scheme that is very easy to work with, non-offensive to buyers, and can practically work with whatever furniture pieces you or your buyers might currently have. But with such a non-committal color scheme, how do you avoid ending up with a room that just feels blah?
FURNITURE PIECES
Think of shapes, sizes, and fabric patterns. In a neutral room devoid of colour, the size and shape of furniture pieces, fabric pattern (or lack of it) is important if you want the room to pop and to capture your buyer’s attention. For example, incorporating pattern through accent furniture pieces (accent chairs in this photo) makes a great statement and breaks the monotony of too much neutral in this room.
GO BOLD!
If big furniture pieces are all neutral and quiet, go crazy and go bold through accessories! A bold patterned rug that repeats the colour of all the big pieces (grey, beige, and dark brown) ties everything up in this living room! It is still neutral and non offensive to buyers but definitely adds a little umph to the space! This can be done by using artworks as well!
FABRIC TEXTURE
Add textural interest such as fur, natural fibers, and bark cloth patterns. Use a mix of materials such as cotton, linen, velvet, tweed, wool, faux fur – whatever you like. When deciding soft furnishings and accessories, make sure you’ve got some variety.
FURNITURE FINISHES
When working with neutrals, texture and finishes are important. For example, you don’t want every table and chair to be made of the same wood. It’s better to have a mix of wood, stone, mirror or metal – whatever works in your space and your design direction. Here’s my tip, metallic accents are perfect for staging! They add texture without complicating the room’s color scheme.
ADD A POP OF COLOUR
A little colour won’t hurt! Introduce colour through small furniture pieces or accessories. Choose a single accent color (we used yellow in this living room for a more dramatic contrast versus the browns ), to break the monotony of a neutral room.
A neutral palette is the perfect choice when staging your home for sale. It is calming, refreshing, and easy for your buyers to personalize. The secret is to find the balance between calmness and interest in every room.
