Tips to Creating a Sense of Space

October 25, 2014

A spacious and clutter free home is always more appealing to buyers. In fact, the number one advise you will always hear from realtors and stagers is to de-clutter to free up some space. Whether you have a small condo or a big home, any extra space that you can show off is always a plus when it is time to sell.

De-cluttering

An easy way to make a space feel larger is to clear away all of the nick-nacks and ornaments providing empty, open surfaces. By removing all of the visual noise, your eyes will instead be able to see the clean straight lines of your furnishings and room openings, making the space feel larger.

Your Wall Colour

Light neutral colours, like beige and greys on your walls can instantly open up a space and can achieve a feeling of airiness. These light neutral colours can help the walls disappear while strong bold and dramatic colours makes it stand out. Here’s my tip, use the same light neutral colour all throughout the house you’ll immediately feel and see the room expands visually.

Natural Light

Dark spaces always feel smaller, while well lit spaces tends to look bigger. Take down those thick heavy drapes and curtains and let the light in. Allowing more natural light through your windows will help the space feel lighter and larger than it is. If you need to use curtains for privacy, opt for a simple white sheers for now.

Consider the size of the room

Choose furniture pieces that works in the space. If you live in a small apartment, an apartment size furniture will work better over a regular sized furniture pieces. Make sure to measure the room before buying big pieces like sofa, dining tables, accent chairs and beds. Don’t take chances and don’t be fooled.  Most furniture pieces looks smaller in the showrooms because furniture stores have a big floor space and high ceilings.

Furniture Placement

Furniture placement is important if you want to more space. For example, if you position your couch facing the living room entrance, it will instantly increase the sense of space and can give your apartment a welcoming feel. Do not block doorways, windows and beautiful sight lines like the view from outside or a beautiful fireplace.

Mirrors

Strategically place mirrors in your home to capitalize on natural light. Big mirrors also creates the impression of extra space by tricking the eye into believing there is a twin room. However, make sure to think about what parts of the room you wish to have reflected before hanging anything. In the picture below, we are reflecting natural light and the trees from outside!
