Mirror, Mirror On The Wall

December 9, 2019

Whether it is used for trends or for trickery, mirrors can make a great addition to any room. As a designer, mirrors are among my favourite finishing elements, touted for their neutrality and almost magical qualities. They sparkle; they create the illusion of more space and light; they bring movement and life to a room. For these reasons, I incorporate mirrors into every one of my design projects.

Beyond mirrors’ obvious beauty, in my opinion, it’s their more subtle qualities that make them essential to a room. This is particularly the case if your room happens to be small. A large mirror visually doubles an area and bounces light throughout to brighten up dark corners. If your room’s short on outdoor scenery, then you’re in luck. Hang a mirror opposite a window to trick the eye into seeing two views. Similarly, a tall, vertical mirror can create the illusion of another doorway, opening up an enclosed space.  No bathroom would be complete without mirrors. A seamlessly designed mirror to sit into a perfectly designed vanity creates a luxurious and clean bathroom design.

TIP: The view is very important when incorporating mirrors in any room. Always check what is being reflected in the mirror before mounting it, to ensure the reflection is pleasing to the eye.

Function aside, mirrors have a classic beauty that makes them a timeless, style-neutral addition to virtually any room. Here are a few ways to put this silver-glass finish front and centre.

Consider using mirrors in place of artwork. All too often, artwork can be overused and overwhelming in a space. Artwork in competition with furniture and people makes the room crowded, and fast. Mirrors can serve as a lighter, softer artwork alternative, reflecting colours, shapes and patterns that already naturally exist in the room.

When used as an accent, a mirror is a great choice as well. Placed atop bedside or otherwise small tables, mirrors lend a look of charm and thoughtful display to your vignette. Again, pay attention to what is being reflected in the mirror. Pair it with something beautiful – fresh flowers, tea light candles, glassware, and double the love.

Tricks of the Trade: Incorporate mirrors around ceiling light fixtures to enhance the fixture’s brightness and boost its glamour. This is a great addition to dining rooms, foyers, bathrooms and other glamorous spaces.

Mirrors can conceal and enhance; they can create the illusion of space, light and openness; they add interest and action, without stealing the spotlight. Look around the next time you find yourself in the most meticulously designed showroom, decadent restaurant or luxurious hotel lobby, and you’re likely to see at least a few mirrors throughout.

If you haven’t yet discovered the awesome potential of mirrors, try them out in your home and see it in a whole new way.
